How to Choose Solar String Lights for Your Balcony or Garden
Solar string lights are popular for balconies, terraces and gardens because there is nothing to plug in. They charge during the day and glow in the evening. These are the points to check before you buy.
Bulb style and light colour
Filament bulbs such as the G40 give a warm, cafe style glow. The ENER-J 7.6m solar string lights use 25 G40 bulbs. If you like to change the mood, the 10m RGB and warm white set has 10 bulbs and a remote control.
Solar panel and battery
A larger panel and battery means longer run time. The T355 has a 4400mAh battery, takes about 8 hours to charge and also charges by USB when the weather is poor.
IP rating
IP44 means the lights are protected against splashes. IP64 adds protection against dust. Both are suited to a balcony or garden, but fully enclose connectors and move the panel under cover in very heavy rain.
Where to place the solar panel
- Choose a spot with direct sun for most of the day.
- Keep it away from tree shade and walls that block light in the afternoon.
- Wipe the panel now and then, as dust reduces charging.
How long should the string be?
Measure your railing or fence first. Add a little extra for gentle loops so the lights hang naturally rather than pulled tight.
