Inverter Bulb vs Emergency Light vs Home Inverter: What to Buy for Power Cuts
Inverter bulb, rechargeable emergency light or home inverter? Compare cost, installation and backup to choose the right light for power cuts.
Power cuts are still part of life in many Indian towns, especially in summer and during storms. There are three common ways to keep the lights on: an inverter bulb, a rechargeable emergency light, or a full home inverter with a battery. Each one suits a different need and budget. This guide explains the difference so you buy the right one.
1. Inverter bulb
An inverter bulb looks and fits like a normal LED bulb, usually in a B22 holder. Inside it has a small rechargeable battery. While the power is on, it works as an everyday bulb and charges itself. When the power goes, it keeps glowing automatically, with no switch to press and no wiring change.
Best for: keeping one or two rooms lit during cuts, such as the living room, kitchen or a shop counter.
Good to know: check the backup hours and the lumens on the product page. A bulb with a removable, replaceable battery lasts longer overall, because when the battery ages you change only the battery, not the whole bulb.
2. Rechargeable emergency light
An emergency light is a portable lamp or tube with its own battery. You charge it from a socket and carry it where you need light, or mount it on a wall. Some models also work as a power bank for a phone.
Best for: carrying around the house, staircases, small shops, night duty and travel.
Good to know: it lights only the area around it and has to be kept charged.
3. Home inverter with battery
A home inverter with a large battery powers several lights, fans and sometimes a TV or router through your house wiring. It is the most complete solution, but also the most expensive, and it needs an electrician, space for the battery and regular battery care.
Best for: homes with long or frequent cuts that need fans and appliances, not only light.
Quick comparison
| Inverter bulb | Emergency light | Home inverter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | Fits a normal holder | None, portable | Electrician needed |
| What it powers | One room of light | Light near it | Lights, fans, appliances |
| Works automatically | Yes | Some models | Yes |
| Upfront cost | Low | Low | High |
Which should you buy?
If you mainly want light in a room during cuts, an inverter bulb is the simplest and cheapest option: screw it in and forget it. Add a rechargeable emergency light for moving around the house. Choose a home inverter only if you also need fans and appliances during long cuts.
