Solar Pathway, Deck and Fence Lights: A Buying Guide for Indian Homes
Walkways, steps and fences are the parts of a home that are dark after sunset and cost the most to wire. Solar pathway, deck and fence lights solve this: there is no cable to lay, no electrician to call, and no electricity bill. This guide explains what to look for and where each type works best in Indian homes, gardens and driveways.
Where each type of solar light belongs
Pathway and driveway lights sit flat in the ground along a path, a driveway edge or a garden border. They mark the route and the edge so people and cars can see where to go. Deck and fence lights mount on a vertical surface such as a wooden fence, a garden wall or the side of steps, and throw a soft pool of light downwards.
What to check before you buy
- Weatherproof rating (IP): an IP65 light is built for rain and dust and suits open ground and driveways. IP44 is splash-proof and suits walls, fences and covered or semi-covered spots.
- Load rating: if the light will be on a driveway, choose one that is rated to be driven over. Our Solar Decking and Pathway Garden Light is rated for 2 tonnes, so a car can roll over it.
- Colour of light: warm white (3000K) feels cosy on steps and fences, cool white (6000K) is brighter and shows the path more clearly. Some lights let you switch between both.
- Battery and run time: look for lights that give several hours of light after a day of sun and switch on by themselves at dusk.
- Where the sun falls: the small panel needs direct daylight. Fit the light where it gets sun for most of the day, away from deep shade.
Our picks for pathways, steps and fences
The Solar Deck and Fence Light (5 LED) lets you switch between warm 3000K and bright 6000K, needs no wiring and is priced at Rs 499. It works well on fences, garden walls and step edges. The Solar Decking and Pathway Garden Light (8 LED) gives cool white and blue light, is IP65 rated and is also Rs 499, which makes it a good choice for driveways, decks and garden paths. How many lights do you need?
For a path, place a light every one to two metres so the light overlaps and there are no dark gaps. For steps, one light per two or three steps is usually enough. For a fence, one light per post gives an even glow. Start with a few, check how the area looks after dark, and add more if needed.
Fitting is simple
- Choose a spot that gets direct sun for most of the day.
- Fix or press the light in place. There is no wiring.
- Let it charge for a full day, then it will switch on by itself at dusk.
